Bonjour Montreal !!!

Bonjour tout le monde je suis arrivé à Montréal !!! yea i know little bit of french haha..i'll be learning more :D

After 25 hours flight from New Delhi, India i finally reached Montreal on 28th August...after that i checked-in hotel and slept like a baby hahah !! no not jetlag i work in the night so i'm used to stay awake...i am a programmer duh ! ahahah so its fine for me ..
So when i arrived at montreal it was extremely hot and it was beautiful too...the downtown montreal is amazing but a bit noisy haha its the place where party never ends !! Don't forget i have to study ahaha

I checked-in my dorm room on 29th Aug and was very excited to meet new floormates and new people . But unfortunately there was no one on my floor at that time, so i decided to go back to the hotel . As my classes will be in downtown Montreal so i will travel from my residence to downtown Montreal in shuttle bus. Its good i live in a place which is very quite , away from the hassel-bassel city life haha ... and i prefer to keep distance between where i study and where i reside its actually refreshing for me but sometimes too hectic to travel .

After all the registerations and getting settled in my dorm i went to buy my new phone ...yea my first iphone yayayay !!! After that i came to my dorm on 1st September and on 2nd September it was my soccer trials yeah! i didn't got selected for the senior team but the coach told me to play in the junior league first ...yeah typical movie style hahahah..its cool atleast i got to meet new people from all over the world and got a chance to play with them...But i'm waiting for the junior league !! i'll show them who's the real boss is :D hahaha

When i moved to my dorm i made some new friends , they are totally cool !! We have students from different part of world and they all live on my floor...So we have people from USA, UK, Germany, Norway , Pakistan, Argentina , trinidad and tobago , China , Canada and i'm from India :D !! Such a diverse environment ....i love it :D

After registering my courses for Master of Applied Computer Science, i came to dorm and went for Barbecue... After that went for my first American Football game ! it was amazing ...okay i admit i didn't understood everything but it was cool...i wont tell the result here ! ahahah...something are better to not discuss hahaha.. Here the food is good...lots of good food joints in downtown Montreal and lots of pubs too...and a very cool Apple inc. showroom too :D

The weather in Montreal is hot and in evening it gets pleasant. In the morning the weather is like 16-19 deg celsius. People in Montreal are cool and friendly ...when i got lost on first day in Montreal they helped me to find my way to the hotel...Most of them speak both French and English...and i also belive its good to be Bilingual so je parle un peu français !!! Here we have lots of churches with beautiful and quaint interior decorations :D

I went to the old Montreal tour and Mount Royal it was so beautiful... Actually the architecture of Montreal is inspired by European Architecture and its awesome ... i will go to Quebec City in my holidays and might sketch some of the famous buildings which have lots and lots of art work, i will sketch because photography is too mainstream !! hahaha...As in Montreal we have headquaters of many of the top Game Development companies i will try to schedule a tour of Ubisoft Montreal ... i want to take a feel of how game development companies work and hows the environment in the technology area.

Street Art and Music is amazing in Montreal...You can find lots of street art in Montreal and believe me they are really very good...and for music you can find people playing instruments on the streets and they sing too...Heavy MTL is the metal fest which takes place in Montreal and big bands like Lamb of God , Slayer etc plays in the fest its like huge...I belive Montreal is really cool place for artists and musicians !!! Yeah don't forget the cold though ! its very cold here and so i'm planning to buy jacket and shoes for winters ... "Don't save money on winter clothes belive me " this is what guy told me when i asked his advice for Montreal winters :D

Donc, ceci est ma première expérience à Montréal, je vais continuer à explorer plus

Bonjour !!! if you have any queries regarding montreal just tweet me, email me, or write a comment and i will try to answer each one of them !!!

My web development and design setup and Tools i use

Bonjour ... I have been bit busy with learning French and packing my stuff as i'm moving to Montreal for my Master's degree so i didn't get enough time to write a blog .... But finally i have find some time and i'm here ... Bazinga !!!..
Today i will tell you about my web design / development setup and tools i use.

For Development : I don't develop websites , I develop dreams
Development is what i am focusing more and learning ruby on rails to make cool running web applications. So my favourite editor is Sublime Text this is one of the best editors i have used till now . Another one is Atom this is also amazing editor and we can use it to code our backend of the web applications.
I use Macbook Pro for both designing and developing the website. I also recommend to use Unix as operating system cause both Mac OS X and Unix are powerful operating system for development , don't forget the Mac OS X terminal and Unix command shell...Execute the commands and get the local server running ...
Earlier i used Windows based machine so i used Notepad++ as my editor ... i had great experience working on this editor but then developing ruby on rails web applications is quite hard on Windows based machines...You can try but its time consuming and things get quite sloppy..sometimes very sloppy ahaha...
Switching to Mac was one of my best decisions and i think i will be sticking with my Mac forever ahaha.. Another Apple fan boy ...lol... But yes the developer command line tools can be easily run in the terminal and it becomes very easy to execute commands... I Love my Mac..

For Designing : Design is more than making things pretty
As i'm a self taught web developer and designer i explore all softwares myself and also by reading experienced designer and developers blogs and by visiting their website and asking them what software they use. So for Designing i recommend to purchase Sketch for User Interface design. Also if possible purchase Creative Cloud too...Install Photoshop & Illustrator . You can get the icons from different websites and some are free while others are paid...Before starting the website design , I go through wireframe process Yes guys wireframing is very important , and for this i use normal pen and paper... Make the sketch of the website design on paper before starting it on any software...this will give you new ideas for design and you can work with some innovative designs.

So this is my design and development setup and tools which i use . I hope you can learn more about exploring each and every software . Also if you have any queries do ask me or tweet me.. Keep it up guys !!!!

Bonne Chance !!!

Seting up Rails development environment on Mac

Let's begin the Ruby on Rails development environment setup on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite !!! This will take about 30 minutes.

First we need to install Homebrew , it allows us to install & compile software packages easily from the source.
Open the terminal and run the following command:

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

Now we have Homebrew installed so we can start with Ruby installation. To manage Ruby versions we will be using rbnev and will run all the commands through terminals.
Run the following commands in your Terminal:

brew install rbenv ruby-build

Add rbenv to bash so that it loads every time you open a terminal
echo 'if which rbenv > /dev/null; then eval "$(rbenv init -)"; fi' >> ~/.bashprofile
source ~/.bashprofile

Install Ruby
rbenv install 2.2.2

rbenv global 2.2.2
ruby -v

Congrats finally Ruby is installed on your Mac.Now let us start installing Rails.
Its very easy to install Rails...Just type the following commands in your terminal:
gem install rails -v 4.2.3

We can verify Rails is installed by typing the following command:
rails -v

After install Ruby and Rails framework lets start with setting up a Database. Rails default database is sqlite3 , but the problem is that heroku doesn't allows us to deploy the application if the application is made entirely on sqlite3. So we can use MySQL or PostgreSQL.

Let's start with the PostgreSQL setup.
brew install postgresql

Once the action based on this command is completed then follow the instructions and run them.
By default the postgresql user is your current OS X username with no password. So use your username to login to postgresql .

Now you for those who want to use MySQL Databse , follow these instructions:
brew install mysql

The user of mysql is root with no password.

Finally we have completed all the basic steps now lets create a demo application and lets call this application "demoapp".
So follow these simple steps :

rails new demoapp

rails new demoapp -d postgresql if you want to use PostgreSQL as your database
                                 or
rails new demoapp -d mysql if you want to use MySQL as your database

Now move into the application directory

cd demoapp

If you have setup PostgreSQL or MySQL with a username/password , don't forget to make changes into config/database.yml file , its very important !!!

Now create the database

rake db:create

Finally run the rails local server to check that your application is up and running
rails server

Visit http://localhost:3000 to view your new and first rails web application. If you received an error that said Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) then you need to update your config/database.yml file to match the database username and password.

Bonjour !!! If you have any doubts do ask me or comment here, i'll try to answer them as quickly as possible :)

Hi and welcome to my tutorial of building a blog with jeykll !!!

In this post i will explain how i created a blog using Jeykll. I was bored of using Wordpress and other blogging websites so i decided to migrate from Wordpress to Github pages using Jekyll. Basically jekyll seemed like a great alternative and the entire blog is a set of static files , pretty sefe no? hahaha... Also GitHub provides free hosting for Jekyll blogs so i can save some money !!!

1.Getting Started

So instead of reading entire documentation we will start by forking a repository. This will save a lot of time and effort. Visit the following link : https://github.com/barryclark/jekyll-now and top right corner click on the fork button to copy the blog theme to your GitHub account.
2.Host on GitHub pages

As you are GitHub user you can make use of one free "user website", which will work on http://yourusername.github.io. This is pretty amazing !!! Now quickly click on the "Setting" button in your newly forked repository and change the repository name to "yourusername.github.io" using your GitHub username . Your website will go live immediately !!
We are doing awesome work till now but let customize our website ....
3.Website Customization

Open "config.yml" file and modify your website name, description , links to social networking accounts etc...Don't forget to commit the changes :D
Fine we are doing great but how will we publish our first blog post ????
4.First Blog Post here we come !!!

Open and edit "/posts/2014-3-3-Hello-World.md" and write your own content and save it. Change the file name to todays date and edit the title of your post. Default structure of the file will be year-month-day-title.md
You can also create a new blog posts on GitHub directly by clicking the "+" icon in "/posts". Dont forget to name the file correctly.
Optional Steps

You can use various themes to make your blog look more pretty . If you want to enable Disqus Comments on the blog then modify the file "layouts/default.html" after that you can go to your Disqus account and they will provide you all the necessary code to set up the comments.
Apart from that you can also enable Google Analytics on the website. Just register your website through Google Analytics and then google will provide you javascript tracking code to embed on website.
So these are some cool things that you can do to setup your own personal blog . If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me either on comments or you can send me email, tweet me ... i will answer them :D

Bonjour !
